Help keep these areas clean and open by recreating responsibly. Always stay on marked, designated routes and Pack-it-in Pack-it out. There are no designated campgrounds or services in the OHV areas on the Tonto National Forest. It is your responsibility to clean up after yourself. Be sure to:
- Stay on designated routes. Do not make new trails or drive on user-created routes.
- Do not harass wildlife. Riding over plants destroys wildlife habitat.
- Signs are important for travel and your safety. Do not destroy signs. Staff and volunteers spent a lot of time installing those signs.
- Avoid creating dust. Slow down and enjoy the ride!
- Keep out of closed areas. Do not trespass. They may be closed for your safety!
- Leave ranch gates as you found them, whether opened or closed. If entering a Permit Zone with gates, always close and lock the gates behind you, no exceptions.
- Fences keep livestock confined and are important for everyone’s safety – Do not cut fences.
- Do not drive on a route smaller than the width of your vehicle. Single track routes are for single track only, etc.
- Pack it in, pack it out. Help us keep the Forest clean and enjoyable for everyone!
- Reduce the risk of fire. Make sure your vehicle’s spark arrester is in good working condition. If camping with a campfire, be sure to put the fire DEAD out and cool to the touch before leaving the area. Always check the Forest’s website or social media pages for current Fire Restrictions.
- Be considerate of others by sharing trails. Pull off to the side of the trail, shut off your engine if you have a louder vehicle, and let horses and hikers pass.
- Use hand signals to show passing vehicles how many vehicles are in your group. It can save lives!
Travel Management Plan & MVUM
The Tonto National Forest released the Final Record of Decision (ROD) for the Forest’s Travel Management Plan on October 5, 2021. The Tonto is currently drafting a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) as required by the 2005 Travel Management Rule to display the designated roads, trails, and areas for motor vehicle use. These maps will be available for free for the public to download onto their devices or pickup at a District Office.
